The power of the PM – how the addition of a single word flips people’s responses
This is in sharp contrast to support for Govt run enterprises in general

The power of the PM – how the addition of a single word flips people’s responses
You may remember last week’s survey on privatisation that we had done. We had asked 4912 voters across all districts in the Hindi belt “Do you think govt should own & run many businesses or the private sector should do it?”.
The results were:
62% Govt
20% Private sector
18% No opinion
This week, we changed the question slightly.
We asked 10,784 adults across all districts in the same states - Rajasthan, Haryana, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh the question:
“Modi govt is planning to privatise many govt companies. What is your view about this?”
Instead of just govt, we made it “Modi govt” to see if that changed responses.
The results were dramatically different:
46% agreed
35% disagreed
18% had no opinion
Just the phrasing as “Modi govt” instead of “govt” created a positive perception for privatisation.
From a 20-62 result, it became 46-35 – a 26% swing.
Is this the new "politics of blind faith" in the Hindi belt?
Survey Method: Samples were selected in a randomised and stratified manner using scientific techniques. Opinions were gathered using interactive voice response technology.
